The Romans built high-quality roads like via Appia with several layers of cemented stone over compacted subgrade. These roads were crowned, had drainage ditches on either side, dirt pathways for sidewalks along their edges and often used at least three courses that contained cementing materials including cement, lime, or tar. The via Appia is believed to have been the first Roman road to feature the use of lime cement. The materials were volcanic rock. The surface was said to have been so smooth that one could not distinguish the joints. Several original sections still exist, although the cement has eroded out of the joints, leaving a very rough surface.  It was built in 312 BC under Appius Claudius Caecus and connected Rome with Capua.  The roadway was later extended to Beneventum, Tarentum, and Brundisium. It was the chief highway to Greece and to the East. Its total length was more than 350 miles. It was the first strand of what was to become a great web of paved highways throughout the whole Mediterranean world. There was nothing like it and without it Rome could not have won its tremendous empire.
One of the founders of Appian Engineering, Inc., Tony Rigoni, was born and raised in Italy.  Being a proud Italian, Tony  wished to emphasize his heritage to the newly formed company.  He named the company after an ancient road in Rome, Italy called via Appia (also known as the Appian Way). The Via Appia, built in 312 BC, has withstood the test of time and is still in use today. Via Appia provides a fitting logo for the company. It symbolizes QUALITY and ENDURANCE, two attributes that Appian Engineering, Inc.strives to provide in all our projects!
